Bill Gates Recognizes AI Challenges While Embracing Its Potential in Conversation with PM Modi
In a discussion with Bill Gates, Prime Minister Narendra Modi acknowledged the challenges presented by AI and emphasized the need for immediate regulations to mitigate potential misuse while embracing Artificial Intelligence (AI) in India with a vigilant approach. Prior to granting access to AI technologies, Modi stressed the importance of providing appropriate training.
“If such a good thing (AI) is given to someone without proper training, misuse is possible,” Modi suggested, advocating for a clear watermarking of AI-generated content to prevent confusion.
In a democratic country like India, Modi recognized the possibility of anyone using deepfakes. “It is crucial to acknowledge that deepfake content is AI-generated. We need to think about what to do and what not to do,” he stated, urging the establishment of clear guidelines and separating authentic content from deepfake creations.
For instance, he pointed out the potential misuse of his voice, which could initially deceive people and spread large-scale misinformation, emphasizing the need to mention the source of deepfake content.
Addressing concerns about AI’s negligent deployment, Modi issued a poignant warning against viewing it solely as a “magical tool” and highlighted the risk of serious injustice when used without due diligence, particularly in competitions between humans and AI chatbots like ChatGPT.
Echoing Modi’s sentiments, Bill Gates provided insights into AI’s dynamic nature, describing the current phase as filled with challenges and opportunities, akin to “early days.”
“These are the early days of AI, and I think everyone is using it. On the same day, you will be amazed at how good it is, and you will also be amazed at how bad it is. It will do things that you find difficult, and then it will fail at things that you find easy,” Gates remarked.
He highlighted the ongoing celebration of Microsoft’s 25 years in the country during his trip to Hyderabad, remarking on the fantastic experience it offered. Gates acknowledged the need to improve accuracy and suggested viewing the current phase as a prototype, aiding in providing feedback and potentially enhancing creativity and productivity.
“It feels like AI is a big opportunity, but it also comes with some challenges,” Gates concluded.
In summary, Modi and Gates’ discussion underscores the imperative of embracing AI cautiously while implementing stringent regulations to prevent misuse and harness its potential for the betterment of society.
